Augustine Veliath is a professional with 42 years’ experience as communication strategist, social mobilizer, writer, publisher and communication trainer.

Augustine is also South Asia’s leading voice on fifth quintile listening and harvesting conversations. He has also great track record in mobilizing and working with young people.

He has served UNICEF for 23 years as a Communication Specialist, working in the most challenging states of India. He has also served as Media Advisor to the Government of India. 

Augustine as a Founder Director

Augustine  is a founder director of the Asian Center for Entertainment Education.  He works on linking creative communities (film, Television, radio, folk) to priorities of our times.

Education

With postgraduate certificates from London University Institute of Education (on production of distance learning materials) and the Fielding University of Califronia (on fundamentals of world café processes), Augustine  has a post graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass communication and a Bachelors degree in Philosophy.

He has done specialized studies in communication for development with John Hopkins University Baltimore, Commonwealth Institute, Ontario,   the Thomson Foundation, London and the National Informatics Center.

In a professional career spanning some 42 years, his work has focused on results-oriented programme management in the areas of communication, advocacy, media relations and resource mobilization. His professional experience cuts across UN, public, private, non-profit and media sectors.

A strong believer in the leadership of children he trained thousands on the convention of the rights of children and promoted child participation in many pioneering ways.

His former employers include the United Nations system (UNICEF) 1988 — 2011; Government of India (MHRD) 1987, Voluntary Health Association of India and the Catholic Health Association of India 1975 – 1986, Manas Publications 1975, the Century 1973-75 and the Indian Express 1972-73, International Civil Servant He joined UNICEF in 1988 to support the world’s biggest health communications campaign (UIP). Mobilised among others, film stars, script writers of Bollywood for children. (Project Smita, National Script writers Conference). Ran the 7 cities campaign in Madhya Pradesh. Was responsible for communication campaign that contained the cholera epidemic in Delhi – 1988.

 

Public Health

As the Head of the Department of Publications in Voluntary Health Association of India Augustine  published and marketed more than 350 health learning materials, some of them in 17 languages, and was also leading campaigner for the national alliance for nutrition of infants. His work has focused on results-oriented programme management in the areas of communication, advocacy, media relations and resource mobilization.

He joined UNICEF in 1988 to support the world’s biggest health communications campaign (UIP). Mobilised among others, film stars, script writers of Bollywood for children. In the Best Interest of the Child

A passionate advocate on child rights, he has contributed to many national campaigns including child survival revolution, child rights movement, global movement for children, universal immunization program and the polio eradication program.

A strong believer in the leadership of children he trained thousands on the convention of the rights of children and promoted child participation in many pioneering ways.

Thousands of children especially in the hindi speaking states have voiced their opininion thanks to Augustine  through child rights congresses, children’s parliaments, as child reporters, children’s committees, Bal Panchaysts, children’s broadcasting days, Meena clubs etc.

Early Influences

Born  on an Epiphany Day , in Kerala. It is  india’s southern most state and most literate one.  He is  the eldest of seven in a Syrian Christian family . About his birth place he has this to say ” 24 kilometers and 1200 years separate me Adi Shankara, the proponent of Advaita.

About the times that he was born he says, in another six years after my birth the people of Kerala would elect a Communist Government for the first time anywhere in the world. Progressive and social justice  movements were part of his growing  years.
He is   married to Grace for last 34 years.  His only  son, Benny   works with a leading multinational telecom company in India . He  lives  in Delhi but ocassionally  retreats to  his ancestral home in the picturesque Western ghats near Munnar in Kerala.

Hosting  and Harvesting Conversations

 

Augustine hosts conversations to strengthen India’s democratic process and to raise India to the power of Y. He  work in the area rights and participation of children and the leadership of young people. He would like to be India’s leading voice on the art and culture of listening.

Augustine a World Citizen

From Mexico City to Manila Augustine has travelled widely as a professional. He has done assignments in Manila, the Caribbean’s, the US, England, Switzerland, Germany, Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.

Augustine was India’s official delegate to the World Health Assembly in 1982 and ICort II in 1989. He was also a Board Member of the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN).

Some Innovations of Augustine.

  1. The television spots (public service advertisements) he  produced on behalf of UNICEF for the health ministry dominated super prime time television for ten years on what was then India’s only national channel, the Doordarshan.
  2.  He has  published and disseminated over 400 plus health  communication materials, some of them in 17 languages in the 70s and 80s. He ran for over a decade, what Dr David Morely describes as the third World’s single largest resource center on public Health.
  3.  The entire Indian  cricket team for the first time  signed  an appeal for sacral cause  which was individually addressed to 100,000 college students in Uttar Pradesh alone on prevention of HIV/AIDS
  4. Wrote the concept note on Red Ribbon Express a educational train which goes around the country year after year spreading the message of HIV prevention and encouraging 180 towns and cities to have communication expo of their own.
  5. The Kerala Government has carried in its ration card 10 life saving messages Augustine slipped in for the last 25 years.
  6. Lions in India observe Measles Minus Day every year, because of Augustine’s advocacy efforts in the early 90s.
  7.  The HIV/AIDS related   stigma was unpacked through real life experiences of 101 positive men, women and children, through a play written after expensive consultation with them and performed by the National School of Drama artists in nine cities and towns of North India.
  8. Ran a successful  nine cities urban mobilization campaign in Madhya Pradesh to bring the hither to unreached urban poor to the immunization table for the first  time.
  9.  Lead the mobilization and communication campaign to counter the cholera epidemic in in the capital of India and used a number of innovative communication techniques for the first time.
  10. Children and young people addressed parliamentary task forces several times. Parliamentarians were also listened to child rights and governance. An exhibition o  60 years  setup  by Augustine was the only time  the Indian parliament hosted any event other than those set by the Ministries.
